Opened Door? Walk Through It

We are all fans of music. We may not agree on a specific genre but I can at least say that every individual can appreciate music and its artform. I absolutely love music. As people, I find that we're influenced by the people we're around and what we listen to is determined by that as well. I love to meet people who can open doors for me by introducing me to new artists, bands, and musicians because I can never get enough of the talent that's out there in this world. It can be mainstream, foreign, indie-rock, or someone on YouTube just trying to be discovered. It's always the same message, just a different delivery. Music is what our emotions sound like. It covers everything that we go through. Here's a quote that I found describing music and its influence on listeners.

“Music speaks what cannot be expressed, soothes the mind and gives it rest, heals the heart and makes it whole, flows from heaven to the soul.”

Deep huh? I'm writing this entry because I find myself attending a Vietnamese concert in Biloxi this weekend, something that I never imagined myself attending. It's so different compared to the sold out mainstream concerts that I'm used to attending. I've always listened to Vietnamese music growing up but only the songs my parents seemed to love. Meeting people like Mai and friends from Mobile gave me a better insight on my heritage and a genre that I wasn't accustomed to. Loan paved the way for me even more by showing me what I had been missing out on for years. She introduced me to songs that any Vietnamese person would know and in a way, showed me a big part of who she was. It was a special time. The lyrics were pure. The music was capturing and did everything that the quote above said. Even though I'll be joining people I hardly know at the show this weekend, I'm wondering if I'll be able to point out one song that I might know. It would be a moral victory if I heard my favorite Minh Tuyet song (even though I know a handful). It's the usual sad song about heartbreak, losing a love, and wanting that last chance... but I like it anyways.
